National Museum Prague | Largest Museum in the Czech Republic
The National Museum is not only the oldest but also the largest museum institution in the Czech Republic. Its roots date back to 1789 when it was founded under the name “The Patriotic Museum” by the Bohemian Society of Sciences. The official founding took place in 1818 with collections from Bohemian aristocrats. Today, the National Museum houses more than thirteen million objects.
The National Museum consists of five independent, specialized institutions:
- Natural History Museum,
- Historical Museum,
- Czech Museum of Music,
- Náprstek Museum of Asian, African, and American Cultures, and
- the Library of the National Museum.
The main building, a symbol of Czech national identity, was designed and built in the Neo-Renaissance style by Josef Schulz from 1885 to 1891. This impressive building, one of the most significant architectural monuments in Prague, is characterized by its monumental size, with a frontage of over 100 meters and a magnificent facade with intricate details and decorations. The entrance area is adorned with cast lanterns and an allegorical representation of Czechia with Moravia, Silesia, Elbe, and Moldau by Antonín Pavel Wagner. In addition, at the entrance, there are symbolic representations of history and natural sciences by Josef Mauder, as well as statue groups by Bohuslav Schnirch. The facade is also decorated with gilded marble featuring the names of significant Czech personalities.
