The Eiffel Tower is named after its builder Gustave Eiffel and was built from 1887 to 1889. The first groundbreaking took place on January 26, 1887. Today it is one of the most famous icons of architecture and engineering. Until the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930, the tower was the tallest building in the world. Originally, the tower was only supposed to advertise French engineering for about twenty years and then be demolished again. But this did not happen. Today the Paris Eiffel Tower is still the tallest structure in Paris.
Eiffel Tower | More than just a lookout tower
The Eiffel Tower, originally only built as a lookout tower, has also been used for other purposes throughout history. Because the 7,300 tons of steel were useful as relays for telegraphy and radio communication at the beginning of telecommunications. In 1921, the first public radio broadcast in France was broadcast. During the Second World War, the tower also acquired military importance. That is why the French considered a partial demolition. However, this demolition did not take place either.
In the course of history the tower had several tasks: as a telecommunications tower, as a radio transmitter, as a restaurant and as a lookout tower.
