Moulin Rouge

The Moulin Rouge was founded in 1889 by Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler, who owned the L’Olympia cabaret. It opened on October 6 of the same year, alongside the Eiffel Tower. The name comes from the red mill on the roof, which harks back to the highest point in Paris, Montmartre. Originally used for balls, the Moulin Rouge featured famous Parisian stars, including La Goulue, Yvette Guilbert, and Jane Avril.

Over the years, the Moulin Rouge evolved into a venue for operettas, revues, and even as a cinema. Since 1955, “dinner spectacles” have been offered. In the 1990s, the Moulin Rouge experienced a financial crisis but regained success from 2000 onwards, partly thanks to the well-known 2001 film “Moulin Rouge.”

The cabaret now presents the fascinating revue “Féerie,” a show of superlatives featuring the French Cancan, feathers, rhinestones, and sequins. Various artists, including the famous Doriss Girls wearing more than 1,000 different costumes, perform during the shows.

The Moulin Rouge is not only known for its shows but also for its extensive wine and champagne cellar. It is considered the largest single consumer of champagne worldwide. The name and style of the Moulin Rouge have been copied by many cabarets and nightclubs worldwide.

The most famous song about the Moulin Rouge is “Lady Marmalade.” Over the years, the cabaret has had a fascinating history and remains one of the most famous landmarks in Paris, shaping the Belle Époque era.
